After the holidays, people typically dispose of the boxes their gifts came in by taking them to the curb, often several days in advance. This makes it much easier for thieves to target certain homes because they can easily identify the new valuables inside.

That being said, if you received a new television or even something smaller in size like a smartphone as a holiday gift this year, dispose of the box properly: Break down gift boxes and place them into your recycling or garbage bins the night before or the morning of your garbage pick-up day.

Police also urge residents to report any suspicious activity they observe by calling 911 immediately.
